Choosing Your
Varifocal Lenses
Varifocal (progressive) lenses offer seamless vision from distance through intermediate to near — all in one lens with no visible line. This guide explains everything you need to know about choosing, fitting, and adapting to varifocals.
Why dispensing matters more than the lens. The same premium varifocal can work brilliantly or fail completely depending on how precisely it is fitted. Monocular PD, fitting height, pantoscopic tilt — all affect the final result. At Eye Love Frames, Stewart measures every parameter personally, because getting it right first time saves everyone time and frustration.

How Varifocal Lenses Work
A varifocal lens has a continuous, seamless gradient of power — distance at the top, intermediate in the middle, near at the bottom — all in one lens with no visible dividing line.
Distance Zone
Driving, TV, recognising faces. The largest zone — look straight ahead.
Intermediate Zone
Computer, dashboard, supermarket shelves (40cm–1m). Tilt chin slightly down.
Near Zone
Reading, phone (33–40cm). Lower your chin to look through the bottom of the lens.
The corridor — and why its width matters
The power gradient runs through a narrow central "corridor." Peripheral distortion — the blurring and swim effect at the sides — is the unavoidable optical trade-off for having no visible line. Every progressive lens has it. The quality of the design determines how much, and how wide the clear corridor is.
Premium freeform designs like the Nova UHD achieve significantly wider corridors than budget progressives — which is why the lens design and the fitting accuracy both matter enormously.

Our Varifocal Lenses
We offer two standard varifocal options, plus two premium upgrades for more demanding prescriptions or lifestyles. Stewart will always recommend the right lens based on your prescription, lifestyle, and budget.
A well-proven freeform progressive offering excellent clarity across all three zones. Binocularly optimised for comfortable adaptation. The right starting point for most first-time varifocal wearers and straightforward prescriptions.
Best for: First-time varifocal wearers, moderate prescriptions, patients who value adaptation ease.
Ultra-high definition freeform design with a significantly wider corridor and superior intermediate vision — ideal for digital lifestyles and those who demand the clearest possible vision across all distances.
Best for: Active digital lifestyles, higher ADD powers, anyone wanting the widest corridor and sharpest vision at all distances.
A premium varifocal design engineered for outstanding ease of adaptation and all-day wearing comfort. Lightweight performance with a generous corridor. Includes a free no-quibble replacement within two years.
Best for: Wearers who prioritise comfort, easy adaptation, and long wearing sessions.
Designed for active lifestyles — durable, impact-resistant, and built to handle everything your day throws at it without compromising optical clarity. Includes a free no-quibble replacement within two years.
Best for: Active wearers, sport, outdoors, complex prescriptions or prior varifocal difficulties.
Freeform manufacturing. All our varifocals are manufactured using freeform (digital) surfacing — the progressive surface is calculated individually for each patient and ground by CNC to 0.01D precision. This requires your exact measurements: monocular PD, fitting height, pantoscopic tilt, and frame wrap angle. All of which we measure at every fitting.

Adapting to Varifocals
The swim effect and peripheral distortion are real — they are an optical property of all progressive lenses. Understanding what to expect makes successful adaptation far more likely.
The head movement technique
The most important thing to learn: point your nose at what you want to see rather than glancing to the side with just your eyes. Looking into the periphery takes you off the corridor and into the distortion zones.
Upper lens. Driving, TV, faces. Head in natural position.
Computer, dashboard, shelves. A small chin drop brings the intermediate zone into view.
Reading, phone. Lower your chin to look through the near zone at the bottom of the lens.
Stairs in the first few days. The near zone sits at the bottom of the lens — looking down at stairs can bring near power into your line of sight, blurring step edges. Hold the handrail and look slightly higher (through the distance zone) when navigating stairs until you've adapted.

Specialist Varifocal Types
Beyond standard varifocals, there are designs optimised for specific tasks. Many patients benefit from a second specialist pair alongside their all-day varifocal.
Office / Occupational Lenses
Wider near zone and generous intermediate coverage, optimised for 40cm–3m. Ideal for computer users, office workers, musicians. Not for driving — a separate pair is needed for distance.
Driving-Optimised
Premium designs like the Nova UHD provide the widest distance zone and a clear intermediate zone for dashboard instruments. Transitions XTRActive photochromic activates behind car glass — perfect for driving.
Sport & Active
Freeform designs compensating for high frame wrap angles (up to 15°). For golf, cycling, and outdoor pursuits. Impact-resistant lens materials essential. Often combined with polarised or photochromic coatings.

Why Dispensing Matters More Than the Lens
The most common reasons varifocals fail have nothing to do with the lens quality — they are preventable fitting and measurement errors.
Incorrect fitting height
Too low: near zone inaccessible. Too high: distance zone too small. The most common single failure cause. Always verified before ordering.
Wrong monocular PD
Using total PD split evenly rather than measuring each eye. Symptom: "one eye is sharp, the other isn't." Resolved by re-measuring with a pupillometer.
Wrong lens for the prescription
Budget progressive for a high ADD or significant astigmatism — the corridor is too narrow for the prescription. The solution is a design upgrade, not perseverance.
Frame adjusted after measuring
Pantoscopic tilt measurement becomes invalid if the frame is later adjusted. The freeform calculation is then wrong for the actual wearing position.
Unsuitable frame depth
Shallow fashion frames under 28mm depth are incompatible with most standard progressives. Frame choice must be confirmed before lens selection.
Alternating with old glasses
Wearing old spectacles during adaptation interrupts neural adaptation and can double the adaptation time. Full-time wear from day one is essential.
Why independent matters here. At a high-volume chain you may see different staff for dispensing, collection, and follow-up. At Eye Love Frames, Stewart dispenses, fits, and follows up your varifocals personally — the same person who measured you knows exactly what was recorded and can investigate any issue directly.

Common Questions
Questions we hear most often about varifocal lenses.
How long does it take to adapt to varifocals?
What is the swim effect and will it go away?
Are cheap online varifocals as good as dispensed ones?
Which Varilux lens should I choose?
My previous varifocals never worked — will new ones be different?
Can I wear varifocals if I have astigmatism?
Expert Fitting from Someone Who Takes the Time
The right varifocal succeeds or fails on the quality of the fitting — not just the lens. Book a consultation and we'll find the right combination of design and frame for your lifestyle.
